hi spring chickens! i hope you are having a good day. i was in a bad mood on tuesday and then a little baby said hi to me on the train and i was instantly cured. this is not as good as a little baby saying hi to you, but maybe some of these things could cure your bad mood too!
1. this headline
i truly spent all of wednesday laughing at this. i know it’s not right to poke fun at people’s health conditions but COME ON!!!! a DEAD WORM IN HIS BRAIN?? and HE is the one divulging this info??? hahahahahahaha
2. racing people (unbeknownst to them)
i love to microdose athletic competition by pretending to race my fellow runners in prospect park. i was neck and neck with this older man for like 2 miles the other day but i crossed the (nonexistent and completely made up in my mind) finish line just before him. it feels good to win.
3. the smell of the park right before it rains
something about the combination of humidity and the end of spring landscape was producing the nicest scents monday. i am constantly noticing when things smell terrible in new york, so it was nice to pause and appreciate a good smell.
4. this song
addicted to listening to this song and shimmying my shoulders back and forth like i am the protagonist of a rom com in a good mood montage.
5. inconceivable truth (rococo punch / wavland)
i love this show because it’s a really great story about family drama and it doesn’t try to make it about some larger societal issue, like podcasts are wont to do (at least for the first few eps — i’m not done yet). reporter matt katz is trying to figure out who his biological dad is, and it’s full of twists and good tape. highly recommend for your next binge listen while cleaning the kitchen.
6. balloons and flowers at the 42nd street/times square 2
getting on and off at this station to go to the office is a sensory nightmare. so many people crashing into each other. that guy who dances sensually with a skeleton is always in my way. tourists sometimes ask me how to get to times square, to which i’d like to reply, “turn around and go home.” but i was delighted by these balloons and flowers sitting on a bench.
7. “a small, good thing” by raymond carver
i have been totally unable to read books in the last few months. maybe there is a dead worm in my brain? at any rate, i’ve instead been trying to read some short stories. i thought i’d start with this one by raymond carver because of the obvious. it was really depressing and sad! it’s about the death of a child and the failures of communication. simple and well written with a poignant message.
8. trader joe’s scandinavian swimmers
i love candy and i am legally bound to buy these every time i go to trader joe’s. the sour ones are also delicious but a little intense for everyday snacking.
♡good thing from a good person♡
you know those people that you look at at a dinner or a party and just think, ‘thank god you’re here!’ meg fox is one of those people. she is a ray of sunshine wherever she goes and i love being her friend. she’s also the most photogenic person on the planet i think? meg’s got a great thing for us this week that i fully endorse!
Hi good things readers, I'm Meg Fox. Here's my good thing this week: Waking up early.
Now, I don't mean waking up early for work during the week. I mean, waking up early on our days off. There is something so blissful about waking up early on a Saturday morning or even on the random Tuesday of vacation knowing that there is no stress ahead of you. No stress = fun and waking up early prolongs the FUN! Think about it - you never look back and say to yourself, "wow, I'm so glad I slept in." We only have 48ish hours on the weekends and a bank of PTO, so it is ideal to MAXIMIZE your free time by waking up early to seize the day.
Aside from watching the sunrise, please see below for some ideas on how to maximize your free time by waking up early:
Go on a walk and listen to your favorite podcast/album. Tbh I’ve just been listening to the song Espresso on repeat recently
Watch your favorite romcom for the millionth time while catching up on chores
Call your fam. I recommended calling your family with young kids. There’s a 99.9% chance they’re already up by 6:00 am on a Saturday (shoutout to my sister Sarah and nephew Martin)
Get your nails done. Slay on the girlies before they’re even up!
Bombard your friend groupchat with texts recapping the night before
Go to your favorite breakfast spot or try a new spot before the loser late risers take over. I recently tried the diner grill for the first time (late to the party) and it was 10/10.
thanks for reading! and thank you to the people who have submitted good things. here is the form again in case you’re itching to send one:
xoxo
