would you guys tell me if you thought i was a hack? i’m starting to feel like a hack. how many good things described by exaggeration could there possibly be? nevertheless she persisted...
1. milwaukee, wisconsin
people love to go on about how their midsize city is underrated and should be given its due praise, but the only place on earth for which this is true is milwaukee. gorgeous lakefront, dirt cheap, and full of some of the rarest characters alive. i was there this past saturday and every single bar we passed was full by 10 in the morning. going to college there took 25 years off my life but i wouldn’t trade it for anything.
2. when platitudes hit
this is going to sound like i just took a giant rip of a bong, but i swear to you that i’m writing it stone cold sober at 7 am on a wednesday morning. i think this must be related to frontal lobe development and the wisdom of aging, but lately platitudes are really hitting. i’ll be walking around and think to myself, “damn. love IS all that matters.” or “wow… nothing lasts forever… very profound.”
3. stoops
i now live in a building with a stoop, on a street full of stoops, with a bunch of stoop people. it’s such a treat! i need to get a little stoop pillow.
4. deep cover - george santos mini season
i didn’t really know the ins and outs of what this guy’s deal was, just that he was kind of a freak and a scammer. this new miniseries from deep cover about the whole george santos affair has so many juicy details and i am devouring it. it’s co-hosted by amy gaines mcquade, the smartest and most thorough reporter, who also happens to be one of my favorite people. when amy tells a story, you know it’s going to be good (and also unimpeachable). listen to the series, and then listen to this incredible episode about amy’s dad and 9/11’s health impacts:
5. this ep of the ezra klein show
in this episode, klein argues that the issue shaping the 2024 election is gender, and specifically masculinity. i found the distinction that he and his cohosts made between two types of conservative men — “barstool” conservatives and neopatriarchal ones — to be very illuminating. it helped me understand the nuances on the right, why so many young men like trump, and the current state of gender politics in both parties.
6. sierra ferrell’s tiny desk
sierra ferrell seems like a true freak (complimentary). this is what i mean when i say i like country music.
it’s getting awfully quiet in the good thing from a good person corner… dust off the cobwebs and submit something to me!
this week i’m feeding my brain worms love island USA season 6. i’ve been seeing all the tweets about it and i thought when people were talking about ‘kaylor’, they were referring to a couple’s names smashed together. but that is allegedly a woman’s actual name!
see you next week xo
